When I vacation, I want it scheduled to include as many fun and interesting things as possible. Especially if I am somewhere that I will probably never visit again. I can have downtime at home.

I booked five weeks to travel through Venice, Rome, Florence, Barcelona, Paris, Amsterdam, and East Sussex (had to visit Virginia Woolf, Vita Sackville-West, Vanessa Bell, and Henry James). Midway through the five weeks I was exhausted. Europe had just opened after covid (not many tourists), there was a monster heatwave, and I was walking on average 10 miles a day (with terminal heart disease, checking in daily with cardiologist – he’s a gem). I rested in Barcelona spending days sitting at a beach cafe, drinking virgin mojitos, watching waves in the Mediterranean Sea. Doing nothing but staring into the blue was one of the highlights of trip. I think I saw the very best of Barcelona in those days.

We did nothing and it was the greatest. There was no wi-fi or cable so we borrowed DVDs from the public library and watched them on a 20″ TV which had lost its colour from the input cord, so everything was in black and white. We snacked, kept no particular schedule, and were quiet. It was just perfect.

We went to a liquor store near our hotel and bought soju and calpico. Needless to say, we did nothing beside get tipsy in our hotel room. And it’s still one of the most memorable nights I’ve ever had.

Another time where I did nothing on vacay and in paradise was my solo trip to KC for my 22nd. I literally spent a day walking around a large park with the buds on, and ended the day by enjoying some pasta and espresso martinis with a lovely stranger!

After a very busy few days (Giverny! Day trip to Brugges! The Louvre!) we were exhausted. On the last day, we had plans to go to Versailles. It was a beautiful clear sunny day in August with a light cool breeze. We arrived in the early afternoon. We bought lunch and sat down to eat under a tree. After lunch, we both fell asleep in the grass and slept for the whole afternoon. It was the most memorable part of the trip that we always tell people about. Similarly, I went back to Paris years later with my college friends to mark our 30th birthdays. When we got to the Louvre, we decided to sit just outside and have a glass of wine before we went in. We ended up there all afternoon, sipping wine, laughing and telling stories. We never went inside. It was the best day.

My then-husband and I moved far, far away from Seattle. We have friends and family there, and went back regularly. After a couple of trips we invented the big lie. We either gave everyone a bogus arrival date or a bogus departure date. Then we had a couple of days to do what we liked, sleep in, etc. I think everyone knew or suspected the big lie, but it made vacations great.
