As an OB/GYN, I love supporting breast-fed moms and also stressing the importance of feeding your babies the way that works best for you and your family. We are sooo lucky to have safe drinking water and formula that is regulated to keep our babies safe. I know that this is an ad post, but also want to add a shame-free fun fact:

Formula is FDA regulated because babies are sensitive and need the right balance. For this reason, you can totally buy the Sam’s club formula if that is what fits your budget and know your baby is well nourished!

In my experience people who have a similar reaction to yours just really need to believe that their sacrifices were worth it. Only you know if what you gained from breastfeeding was “worth it”. I suspect it was! It sounds like you really cared deeply about it. That doesn’t change the fact that your doctor was right. Unless there was an allergy your baby would not be one bit harmed if you switched to formula! That’s just true. Fed is best is just true.

I think that the article a week ago about disabled parenting relates here. Not all bodies can do all things. That includes mum and baby. We are so lucky that the death rate for babies fell off a cliff in the fifties, seriously, go have a look at the graph. For myriad reasons those babies died and it was not for lack of love from their mothers, our grand-mothers. They died because they did not have access to the incredible safety nets we have today. Employ those safety nets! Whichever and whenever you need. For your own sanity, for your babies health, for the overall happiness of your family.

And if your body has failed you in your desires. Please be careful about the way you speak about yourself. If you wouldn’t say it to a deaf person, an amputee or a cancer patient whose bodies are behaving differently to how they might prefer then you probably need to be gentler with yourself. It’s ok to be sad. It’s not ok to be self-loathing for something so far outside of your control.

We used and loved Bobbie SO MUCH, for the obvious reasons but also because, since it has no sugars in it, it didn’t make anything in our home, clothes included, SMELL like formula!

A couple of invaluable tips we picked up along the way: 1. whichever formula you’re using, and even if you think you won’t be, bring a can to the hospital with you—if your babe ends up needing supplemental feeding like ours did, they won’t have to have the hospital formula and THEN the one you’ve picked, if they’re different, and 2. use room temp water to mix it, so you can then mix it anywhere, on the go, in a restaurant, etc; this made our lives so much easier than getting our babe used to warm formula! p.s. this also goes for napping in lit and noisy spaces from the jump, ha!!!
